Dead at 32 from pancreatic cancer in 1994, Hicks had been performing since the age of 15. but his notoriety only developed in his later years, principally in this country, after frequently being censored on American TV. A fierce polemicist for free speech and free thinking, he raged against religion, politics, advertising and most things American. This documentary by two British film-makers, compiled from interviews with close friends and family, and inter woven with rare footage of Hicks live performances, is particularly valuable in showing the perfecting of a technique probably only matched by his equally notorious predecessor Lenny Bruce.
