Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Capernaum (‘Chaos’), is a new film by Nadine Labaki about the journey of a clever, gutsy 12-year-old Zain, who survives the dangers of the city streets by his wits. He flees his parents and to assert his rights, takes then to court suing them for the 'crime' of giving him life.

Made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own, Capernaum follows Zain. This gutsy streetwise child flees his negligent parents, survives through his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil and her baby son, Yonas, is jailed for a crime, and finally, seeks justice in a courtroom.

Capernaum was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own. Following her script, Labaki placed her performers in scenes and asked them to react spontaneously with their own words and gestures. When the non-actor's instincts diverfed from the written script, Labaki adapted the screenplay to follow them.

No.6 is taking a brief intermission - re-opening scheduled for May 9th

Loyal regulars will be aware that we have had a few technical issues with some of our screenings recently. We have been working to resolve these, and have been pleased that our most recent showings, including lengthy films like Dune: Part 2 and Apocalypse Now, have worked okay. But we feel it’s unfair on you to be crossing our fingers and hoping, we’d rather get things sorted properly.

The plan is to close for the next two weeks and hopefully return on Thursday 9th May. Keep an eye on the No.6 website and newsletter for confirmation or otherwise, and of course to find out what we will be showing when we do return. Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding.
