Everything you need to know about No6 at Portsmouth University...

Back to all posts We are delighted to be showing Moon as our opening night film in our new temporary home at Portsmouth University

Starting with…we will NOT be at the Historic Dockyard until September 2026. So don’t go there!

Before we get into our programme, here’s a quick guide to what you need to know about No6’s temporary residence at Portsmouth university:

  •  The venue is Room 1.10, Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue, PO1 2DJ. The site is fully accessible.
  • Our opening night will be Friday 10th October. There will be a panel of leading experts from the University talking about the film (Moon) from 6.30pm and the film will begin at 7pm.
  • After that, we will be showing films each week on a Thursday and Friday, tickets for our October films are now available via the No6 website.
  • Films will start at 7pm sharp. There are no ads or trailers so the film will commence at 7pm. Be sure to arrive early.
  • We have to be out of the building by 9pm latest so screenings will be under two hours unless we make special arrangements for a longer film.
  • There are 80 seats, so we strongly recommend buying tickets on the No6 website ahead of the film.  We will keep 15 tickets for buying on the door.
  • Tickets will be £7 (£5 for under 25s)
  • Refreshments will be available from the University café. This is run and staffed by the University not by No6.
  • If there’s anything else we haven’t covered above, do contact us at [email protected]

With that, on with this week’s show…

250,000 miles from home. The hardest thing to face...is yourself.

Moon

Friday 10th October at 7pm (panel session at 6.30pm)

What better way to begin our year’s residency at the Eldon Building than by supporting the University’s Space Week celebrations with this special screening of Moon, Duncan Jones superb directorial debut from 2009. Sam Rockwell plays the lone inhabitant of a mining base on the dark side of the moon, approaching the end of his three year stint, but the isolation has taken its toll on his psyche and the situation is not helped by a startling discovery. Drawing on elements from similarly low budget ventures such as Silent Running and Dark Star, as well as Solaris, Alien and Outland (even Red Dwarf), Moon is about as quintessential as a sci-fi movie can get. The Times contemporary review noted that, “though it uses impressive sci-fi trappings to tell its story, this is a film about what it means, and takes, to be human.”

Before the screening there will be a panel session featuring leading experts from the University of Portsmouth to discuss the themes and ideas raised by the film.

Up Next Week:

Black History Month: In the Heat Of The Night, Penguin Lessons

Coming Soon:

Our first full week will be a study in contrasts. To celebrate Black History Month we’re showing the 1967 classic Oscar winner In The Heat Of The Night on Thursday 16th October where Sidney Poitier demands that we call him Mister Tibbs. Also featuring characteristically brilliant performances from Rod Steiger and Warren Oates. Then on Friday 17th October, Steve Coogan and Jonathan Pryce seek to placate a community of penguins angry at having tariffs imposed on them (no, that’s not the actual plot) in the excellent new comedy-drama Penguin Lessons. That’s 7pm sharp on both nights at (lest we forget) the Eldon Building NOT the dockyard, which is where we came in…

A black Philadelphia police detective is mistakenly suspected of a local murder, and after being cleared is reluctantly asked by the police chief to investigate the case.
