Back to all posts The story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century.

With the cinema space unavailable on our usual Thursday to Saturday slots this week, your humble newsletter author thought he might get a week off. But no, such is the dedication of the No.6 staff that they have managed to conjure up a couple of screenings on other days this week, all to ensure the continued cultural edification of our customers. Check the days and times below - including a Sunday afternoon matinee for those hard working people who like to unwind before resuming the weekly grind on Monday morning.

Here is this week’s timetable.

The story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century.

Widow Clicquot

Wednesday 25th September at 7pm

Widow Clicquot is based on the true story of the ‘Grande Dame of Champagne’, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, and her revolutionary role in developing the champagne industry following her husband’s untimely death (not a plot spoiler, it’s right there in the title!). Directed by Thomas Napper and starring Haley Bennett in the title role, filming largely took place in Chablis, France. After all that, dare we mention that the bar opens at 6pm for the 7pm screening.

After getting conned by a scammer pretending to be her grandson, tenacious-93-year old Thelma teams up with a friend (and his motorized scooter) on a wild adventure to take back what’s hers.

Thelma

Sunday 29th September at 3pm

A second (subtitled!) chance to see Thelma, director Josh Margolin’s contribution to the nonagenarian thriller genre we all know and love. June Squibb plays the titular Grandmother who, with the help and motor scooter of her friend Ben (Richard Shaft Roundtree in his last role), hunts down an online scammer in this unusual twist on the action movie. Please note that the film starts promptly at 3pm, and will have subtitles for those hard of hearing.

Our friends at the University of Portsmouth are hosting a series of events as part of an international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. Details of all the exciting events taking place during the week can be found here.
